Elementary Teacher in Fukushima Japan Threatens Students with Deathnote

Someone call L, it looks like Kira is back. The Fukushima Minyu Newspaper reported recently that an elementary teacher in the prefecture was using a Deathnote to frighten students.  The paper states that the man, in his 30’s, was using the image of a Deathnote on a tablet. In addition, he threatened to write students names in the Deathnote if they misbehaved. The incident occurred with four middle school age students.

In the meantime, students reported this behavior to a homeroom teacher who turned the teacher turned Kira into the principal. At this time, there is no word on what reprimand the man received for the behavior.

Deathnote is an anime based on a notebook dropped by the Shinigami, or “death gods”. In the series, if one has their name written in the book they will die. The writer can either write exactly how one will die or simply leave it at the individual’s name letting them die of a heart attack.

It may seem silly to us in the west to think of a notebook as being so powerful, or that these kids should find an anime so frightening. However, it is important to understand the much broader role that superstition and legend play in eastern cultures. For these children, it could have been very frightening.
